How the Bitcoin halving date is estimated

Bitcoin halving is triggered by block height, not by a specific calendar date.

  1. The Bitcoin protocol reduces the block reward every 210,000 blocks.
  2. The next halving will occur at block height 1,050,000.
  3. Bitcoin blocks are mined approximately every 10 minutes on average.
  4. Block times fluctuate depending on network conditions and mining difficulty.
  5. Because block times are variable, the halving date can only be estimated.
  6. The estimate is continuously updated using live blockchain data.

Assumptions

  • Average block time used for estimation: 10 minutes
  • The estimate updates as new blocks are mined.

What can change the estimate?

  • Natural variation in block times
  • Difficulty adjustments and changes in mining conditions

Data sources

This site uses public blockchain data to read the current block height and estimate the remaining time until the target block height is reached.
